Description
This presentation explores the relationship between sharks and people in Plettenberg Bay, the events that led to the establishment of Shark Spotters, and the importance of promoting coexistence through non-lethal shark safety and conservation initiatives.
The presentation will highlight the work of Shark Spotters in Plettenberg Bay before delving into ongoing elasmobranch research in the region. Using a multi-method approach, including cliff-top observations, BRUVs (Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems) & citizen science, the research aims to better understand elasmobranch community dynamics in Plettenberg Bay. Preliminary findings on species seasonality, environmental drivers such as sea surface temperature, and patterns of habitat use will also be presented.
