The Youth Stewardship Program is an environmental education program that works with local high school learners to develop their knowledge. It also aims to build skills and a stronger connection to the natural environment. The program combines classroom-based learning with practical activities, field trips and environmental research. Using the Knysna estuary and surrounding environments as an outdoor classroom.
The program is structured around three main learning areas:
Environmental Education Essentials
Connecting to Nature
Learners are introduced to the Knysna estuary through field trips, outdoor activities, and hands-on experiences. They explore biodiversity and the estuary’s importance. They also consider threats and how people can help protect it. These experiences aim to connect learners with nature.
This environmental education approach encourages ongoing curiosity and responsibility for local ecosystems. It reinforces that individuals can contribute to conservation through daily choices and community action. Ultimately, learners leave with a deeper understanding of and connection to the local natural environment.
Scientific Learning & Computer Literacy
Learners are introduced to the scientific process and take part in practical environmental research. They develop research questions and collect environmental data in the field. They learn how to capture, graph and interpret their results using computer programs such as Excel. This provides learners with practical experience in both environmental science and basic computer literacy, and supports environmental education.
Communication & Advocacy
Learners develop skills to communicate what they have learned and encourage environmental awareness within their communities. Activities include public speaking, storytelling, poster and social media development, and planning community-based environmental initiatives. Additionally, learners are encouraged to use these skills to share knowledge and care for their local environment.
